Grapevine Trunk Diseases Pt. II Webinar
Date: Thursday January 27th, 2022
For the first installment of our 2022 webinar series, we welcomed Dr. José Ramón Urbez-Torres of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Summerland Research and Development Centre in British Columbia, and Dr. Mark Sosnowski of the South Australian Research and Development Institute to present as part of a follow-up webinar to last year's session on Grapevine Trunk Diseases (GTDs). Both Dr. Urbez-Torres and Dr. Sosnowski presented research updates and perspectives on GTDs from their respective countries, with a specific focus on GTDs in mature vineyards.

'Cold Hardiness and Climate Change' Cluster Update Webinar

For our first cluster research update webinar, we welcomed Dr. Harrison Wright (Activity 7A) of AAFC Kentville, Dr. Jim Willwerth (Activity 7B) of Brock University's Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI), and Ph.D. candidate Andréanne Hébert-Haché (Activity 5B) of Centre de recherche agroalimentaire de Mirabel (CRAM) to give presentations on their respective research projects under the Grape & Wine research cluster.

Tissue Culture and Crown Gall Webinar

For our third webinar of 2022, we divide our focus between Tissue Culture and Crown Gall, with expert input from across Canada and the United States. To present on tissue culture, we welcomed Dr. Robin Browne of Acadia University, and Rob Haynes of CGCN-RCCV nursery partner Upper Canada Growers. For the discussion on Crown Gall, we saw presentations from Dr. Tanja Voegel of University of British Columbia-Okanagan, and Dr. Judit Monis of Vineyard and Plant Health Consulting.

'Management of Virus Diseases' Cluster Update Webinar

For our second cluster research update webinar, we welcome the following researchers to present updates on their respective Grape & Wine Cluster projects within the theme of managing grapevine virus diseases: Dr. Tom Lowery of AAFC Summerland (Activity 2A), Dr. Justin Renkema of AAFC Vineland (Activity 3A), Dr. Wendy McFadden-Smith of Brock University (Activity 3B and 18B), and Dr. Debra Moreau and Dr. Harrison Wright of AAFC Kentville (Activity 4A).

Grapevine Red Blotch Virus Webinar

The first installment of this four part webinar series, we welcomed Sudarsana Poojari of Brock University's Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI), Patricia Bowen of the British Columbia Summerland Research and Development Centre, and Marc Fuchs of Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. These three individuals presented on the Grapevine Red Blotch Virus (GRBV) in Canada and internationally - its effects on vine and wine, testing methods, management, and eradication strategies.

For the second installment of this four part webinar series, we welcomed Dr. José Úrbez-Torres and Dr. Tom Lowery of the British Columbia Summerland Research and Development Centre, and Dr. Vaughn Bell of The New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research Limited. These individuals presented on the Grapevine Leafroll Virus (GLRV) in Canada and New Zealand - its effects on vine and wine, vectors and vector management, testing methods, plant material standards, and eradication strategies.

Grapevine Trunk Diseases Webinar

For the third installment of this four-part webinar series, we welcomed back José Úrbez-Torres, a Research Scientist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, along with two international guests - Jonathan Kaplan, an economist at Sacramento State University, and David Gramaje, a plant pathologist from the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences (ICVV) in Rioja, Spain. These individuals presented on the emerging issue of grapevine trunk diseases (GTD) in Canada and internationally - what trunk diseases are, economic impacts, control strategies at the nursery level and young vineyards, and the current situation of GTD in Canada.

Grapevine Rootstocks Webinar

For the last installment of this four part webinar series, we welcomed Dr. Jim Willwerth of Brock University's Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI), Dr. Andy Walker of the University of California Davis, Plant Breeding Centre, Mike Watson of Arterra Wines Canada, and CGCN-RCCV's own Vice-Chair, Bill Schenck, a local Ontario grape grower. Dr. Willwerth and Dr. Walker both presented research updates and perspectives on rootstocks from their respective countries, then the webinar transitioned to a panel discussion moderated by CGCN-RCCV's BC Director, Ross Wise.
Join us again in early 2022 when we will be hosting a "one year later" update on grapevine trunk diseases. This future webinar will focus on pruning and disease management in mature vineyards.
